ReversingAgingwithMSCs Agingischaracterizedbyaseriesofchangesinthephysiologicalfunctionsofanorganism.Thesechangesincludeadecreaseinorganfunction,adeclineinthymicfunction,andadeclineincognitivefunction.SeveralstudieshaveinvestigatedtheuseofMSCsinreversingage-relatedchanges.OnestudyreportedtheeffectofMSCsoncognitivefunctioninagedrats.ThestudyshowedthattransplantationofMSCsresultedinanimprovementincognitivefunction,asevidencedbyenhancedspatiallearningandmemoryperformance(1).AnotherstudyshowedthatMSCstransplantationintothehippocampusofagedratsimprovedtheproliferationofneuralstemcellsandenhancedneurogenesis(2).TheuseofMSCsintissuerepairandregenerationhasalsobeenreported.Forinstance,studieshaveshownthattransplantationofMSCsintotheskinofagedratspromotestheformationofnewbloodvesselsandcollagentissue,whichiscrucialforskinregeneration(3). ThepotentialmechanismsunderlyingtheeffectsofMSCsinreversingaginginratsarestillasubjectofongoingresearch.EvidencesuggeststhatthebeneficialeffectsofMSCsmaybeduetotheirabilitytosecretevariousfactorsthatpromotetissuerepairandregeneration.OnestudyreportedthatMSCssecretesignificantamountsofcytokines,growthfactors,andchemokines,whichhavebeenshowntoenhancetissueregenerationandmodulateimmuneresponses(4).AnotherstudyreportedthatMSCssecreteexosomes,whicharesmallvesiclesthatcontainvariousbioactivemolecules,includingmicroRNAsandgrowthfactors,whichcanmodulatetheimmunesystemandpromoteti
