Roadsafety:apublichealthissue Attheinquestintotheworld’sfirstroadtrafficdeathin1896,thecoronerwasreportedtohavesaid“thismustneverhappenagain”.Morethanacenturylater,1.2millionpeoplearekilledonroadseveryyearandupto50millionmoreareinjured.Thesecasualtiesoftheroadwillincreaseifactionisnottaken. Throughouttheworld,roadsarebustlingwithcars,buses,trucks,motorcycles,mopedsandothertypesoftwo-andthree-wheelers.Bymakingthetransportationofgoodsandpeoplefasterandmoreefficient,thesevehiclessupporteconomicandsocialdevelopmentinmanycountries.Butwhilemotorizedtravelprovidesmanybenefits,itcanalsodoseriousharmunlesssafetyismadeapriority.Pedestriansandcyclistsusingroadsareparticularlyatrisk.Crashesarefrequent.Deathsandinjuriesarecommon. Ifcurrenttrendscontinue,thenumberofpeoplekilledandinjuredontheworld’sroadswillrisebymorethan60%between2000and2020.Mostoftheseinjurieswilloccurindevelopingcountrieswheremoreandmorepeopleareusingmotorizedtransport.Inthesecountries,cyclists,motorcyclists,usersofpublictransport,andpedestriansareespeciallyvulnerabletoroadtrafficinjuries. Roaddeathsandinjuriesarepreventable Therearesolutionstotheroadsafetyproblem.Awiderangeofeffectiveinterventionsexist,andexperienceincountrieswithlonghistoriesofmotorizedtravelhasshownthatascientific,“systemsapproach”toroadsafetyisessentialtotacklingtheproblem.Thisapproachaddressesthetrafficsystemasawholeandlooksattheinteractionsbetweenvehicles,roadusersandtheroadinfrastructuretoidentifysolutions. Thereisnosingleblueprintforroadsafety.Interventionsandstrategiesthatworkinonesettingmayneedtobeadaptedelsewhere.Duringthecomingmonths,WHOwillfocusspecificallyoninterventionsrelatingtofiveofthemanyfactorsthatcauseroadtrafficdeathsandinjuries. Makingourroadssafer WorldHealthDay2004isdedicatedtothethemeofroadsafety.Onthisday-7April-WHOandtheWorldBankwilllaunchtheWorldreportonroadtrafficinjuryprevention,whichpresentscurrentknowledgeoftheglobalroadtrafficinjuryproblemandoffersscience-basedevidenceandsolutionstoaddressit.WHOandpartnersar
