BorninBolton1875,HoldenwaslaterapartnerintheAdams,HoldenandPearsonPartnership,oneofthemostprolificandsuccessfulfirmsinBritain.OverthecourseofhislongcareerHoldendesignedbuildingsbothinBritainandabroad.FromthetallestofficebuildinginLondon,towarmemorials,aUniversityandthefirstofthegreatpublicbuildings,themodernUndergroundStation.IncludingworkwiththeImperialWarGravesCommission,whereHoldendesignedsomeofthemosteloquentmemorialstohonourthedead. Holdenembodiedboththearchitectureofthemodernandthatofthepast.Amasterofthetraditionalclassicalformwithaprofoundknowledgeofconstructionandmaterials.Hismodernitycamefromhisbeliefthatarchitectureshould,'...throwoffitsmantleofdeceits;itscornices,pilasters,mouldings...' Hewasfarmoreconcernedwithfunctionalproblems;howrainwatercouldnaturallycleanawall;theflowofpedestriansthroughabuilding. Holdenbelievedarchitectureshouldbeacollaborativeeffort,whichexplainswhyhedeclinedaKnighthood,twice.Ahighlymodestman,whowasyetabletoexercisesuchaninfluencethathewasnearhero-worshippedbyhiscolleagues. Holden'sarchitecturewasfunctionalandaccessible.Moreimportantlyheresistedtherevivalistarchitectureoftheperiodwithhisownsenseofthemodern.
