CharlesDickensCharlesDickens(1812-1870)isconsideredtobeoneofthegreatestEnglishnovelistsoftheVictorianperiod.Dickens'sworksarecharacterizedbyattacksonsocialevilsinjusticeandhypocrisy.CharlesDickenswasborninLandportHampshireonFebruary71812.Hisfatherwasaclerkinthenavypayofficewhowaswellpaidbutoftenendedupinfinancialtroubles.In1814DickensmovedtoLondonandthentoChathamwherehereceivedsomeeducation.HeworkedinablackingfactoryHungerfordMarketLondonwhilehisfamilywasinMarshaleadebtor'sprisonin1824In1824-27DickensstudiedatWellingtonHouseAcademyLondonandatMr.Dawson'sschoolin1827.From1827to1828hewasalawofficeclerkandthenworkedasashorthandreporteratDoctor'sCommons.HewroteforTrueSon(1830-32)MirrorofParliament(1832-34)andtheMorningChronicle(1834-36).Hewasinthe1830sacontributortotheMonthlyMagazineandTheEveningChronicleandeditedBentley'sMiscellany.Inthe1840sDickensfoundedMasterHumphry'sClockandeditedtheLondonDailyNews.Dickens'scareerasawriteroffictionstartedin1833whenhisshortstoriesandessaysappearedinperiodicals.HisSketchesByBozandThePickwickPaperswerepublishedin1836.InthesameyearhemarriedthedaughterofhisfriendGeorgeHogarthCatherineHogarth.ThePickwickPaperswerestoriesaboutagroupofratheroddindividualsandtheirtravelstoIpswichRochesterBathandelsewhere.Dickens'snovelsfirstappearedinmonthlyinstallmentsincludingOliverTwist(1837-39)whichdepictstheLondonunderworldandhardyearsofthefoundlingOliverTwistNicholasNickelby(1838-39)ataleofyoungNickleby'sstrugglestoseekhisfortuneandTheOldCuriosityShop(1840-41).AmonghislaterworksareDavidCopperfield(1849-50)whereDickensusedhisownpersonalexperiencesofworkinafactoryBleakHouse(1852-53)ATaleOfTwoCities(1859)setintheyearsoftheFrenchRevolution
