Perfumesandscentedproductshavebeenusedforcenturiesasawaytoenhanceoverallpersonalappearance.

Previousstudieshadshownperceptionoffacialattractivenesscouldbeinfluencedwhenusingunpleasantvs.pleasantodors.

However,itwasnotknownwhetherodorsinfluencetheactualvisualperceptionoffacialfeaturesoralternatively,howfacesareemotionallyevaluatedbythebrain.

Thecurrentstudydesigncenteredontheprinciplethatjudgingattractivenessandageinvolvetwodistinctperceptual（感知的）processingmethods:attractivenessisregardedasanemotionalprocesswhilejudgmentsofagearebelievedtobecognitive,orrationally-based.

Thissuggeststhatolfactory（嗅觉的）andvisualcuesindependentlyinfluencejudgmentsoffacialattractiveness.

Withregardtothecognitivetaskofageevaluation,visualagecues(morewrinklesandblemishes)werelinkedtoolderageperception.

However,odorpleasantnesshadamixedeffect.

Visualagecuesstronglyinfluencedageperceptionduringpleasantodorstimulation,makingolderfaceslookolderandyoungerfaceslookyounger.

Thiseffectwasweakenedinthepresenceofunpleasantodors,sothatyoungerandolderfaceswereperceivedtobemoresimilarinage.
