Background WritinganxietyisacommonissueamongstudentslearningEnglishasaforeignlanguage.AccordingtoareportbytheAmericanCounselingAssociation,approximately95%ofstudentsexperiencesomeformofwritinganxiety.Thisanxietyiscausedbyseveralfactorssuchasfearofbeingjudgedbytheirteachers,fearofmakingmistakes,fearofalowergrade,lackofconfidence,andalackofwritingskillsandtechniques. ThepressureonmiddleschoolstudentstowritewellinEnglishishigh,andwithstandardizedtestssuchastheTOEFLandIELTS,wherewritingisasignificantcomponent,theanxietylevelhasincreasedevenmore.AccordingtoasurveybytheBritishCouncil,88%ofstudentsfeelanxiousaboutwriting,and55%ofstudentsdonotlikewritinginEnglish. CausesofWritingAnxiety Severalfactorscancausewritinganxietyamongmiddleschoolstudents.Oneoftheprimarycausesisthefearoffailure.Studentsareoftenafraidofnotmeetingtheirteachers'expectations,performingpoorlyinexams,andnotachievinggoodgrades.Thisfearcanleadtoself-doubt,negativeself-talk,andalackofmotivationtowrite. Anothercauseofwritinganxietyisthefeelingofinadequacy.Studentsmaybelievethattheydonothavethenecessarywritingskillsandtechniques,makingthemfeelinferiortotheirpeers.Thisfeelingofinadequacyleadstoalackofconfidence,whichcanresultinanegativeattitudetowardswriting.
