Introduction Wordchunks,alsoknownasmultiwordexpressionsorcollocations,areafundamentalaspectoflanguageuseandanessentialtoolforeffectivecommunication.Althoughwordchunkshavelongbeenrecognizedasakeyelementoflanguagelearninganduse,theirstudyhasbeenlargelyneglectedinacademiccircles,particularlyinthefieldofappliedlinguistics.ThisstudyaimstoaddressthisgapintheliteraturebycomparingtheuseofwordchunksinacademicpaperspublishedinEnglish-languagejournalsbyChineseandnon-Chineseauthors. Methodology Acorpusof100researcharticles,50byChineseauthorsand50bynon-Chineseauthors,wascompiledfromavarietyofEnglish-languagejournalsinthefieldofappliedlinguistics.Thecorpuswasanalyzedusingcorpuslinguisticsmethods,includingfrequencyanalysis,keynessanalysis,andcollocationanalysis,toidentifypatternsofwordchunkusebyChineseandnon-Chineseauthors. ResultsandDiscussion ThestudyfoundthatwhilebothChineseandnon-Chineseauthorsusedwordchunksintheiracademicwriting,thereweresignificantdifferencesinthefrequency,nature,andfunctionofthewordchunksused.Chineseauthorstendedtouselongerwordchunks,suchasfour-wordexpressions,andreliedheavilyoncollocations,particularlynoun-verbandadjective-nouncollocations.Theyalsousedmoreformulaiclanguage,suchasopeningandclosingformulae,andfrequentlyusedtranslationequivalentsofChineseexpressions. Non-Chineseauthors,ontheotherhand,tendedtouseshorter,two-wordexpressionsandreliedmoreonphrasalverbsandidiomaticexpressions.Theyalsousedmorehedging
