RomanticshavewantedtointerprettheremarkableandremarkablyuncontestedlossofpoliticalandeconomicpowerofthetraditionalBritishrulingelite,astheirfinalandultimatemanifestationofnoblessobligeandfundamentalwisdomandhonour.Thistooseemssomewhatfar-fetched,tosaytheleast.TheBritisharistocracywasasaclassandaculturenobetterandnoworsethanmostotherrulinggroups,whattheydidhoweverexperience–togetherwitheveryothersegmentofBritishsociety–duringthesecondhalfofthe19thcenturyandthefirstdecadesofthe20th,wereprofoundsocial,economicandpoliticalchanges,andthesetheywerelesswell-adaptedtocopingwith,thantherisingupper-middleclasses,whowouldineffectusurptheirpositionasrulersofBritain(orarguablymergewithcertainsectionsofthearistocracytoformanewelite).WhythischangewasnotaccompaniedbyviolenceandrevolutionaryturmoilinBritain,asitwasinmanyotherEuropeannationstatesisnotsubjectofthisessay,andhenceIamnotgoingtodiscussthisinterestingbutpossiblyoverratedquestion.NoramIgoingtotrytounravelwhatitsupposedlywasaboutthesocio-culturalmake-upoftheBritisharistocracy,thatwouldcostititsone-timepositionasrulerandownerofBritain.Withoutwantingtodeprecatetheimportanceofcultureformostmeaningfulanalysesofsocietalphenomena,Ishallratherfocusoneconomicandpoliticalfactorsinthisessay,asitwasaboveall,onevitaleconomicandpoliticalfactorthatcharacterisedthearistocratandsethimasidefromthenon-aristocrat,assuredhispower,andwouldeventuallycausehisdeclineint
