toldtheyneededtolearnEnglishinordertogetajob,earnmoneyandbuyahouseornice
things.
However,fearingalossofhistoryandculture,theIndianNationsareexperimentingwithnew
waystoincreasethelanguageabilityoftribalmembers.
Atleastoneorganizationisturningtomoderntechnology---TheSealaskaHeritageInstitute,a
nonprofitgroup,hasdevelopedtwoappsforspeakersoftheTlingitlanguage.
Theappservesasareferenceforimportantlanguagetopicssuchas
conversationphrases,number,andletters.
TheTlingittribehasabout10,000members.TheylivemainlyinsoutheasternAlaska.Butasof
2013,thetribehadonly125nativespeakersleft.inaddition,veryfewyoungpeopleareableto
speakTlingit.
