Abstract
Recently,“Englishness”hasbeenanimportantandhotsubjectofdebateinthewesternliterarycriticism.“Englishness”istheidentityofBritishownnationandtheprocesstodelimitatetheirownestates.Englishnovel,asthesignificantliterarycarrierof“Englishness”,isturnedintothesignificantresearchfieldof“Englishness”unquestionably.TheUnitedKingdomisamightystateintheVictorianage,when“Englishness”ispresentedprominently.BleakHouseisoneofthenovelswrittenbyCharlesDickensinhispeakstage.ThisnoveldescribesthelivesofdifferentclassesunderthenewindustrialrevolutioninthemiddleoftheVictorianage.Andinthisnovelthereisdeliberatecontrastbetweencityandcountryside.Thisthesisinterpretstheconstructionof“Englishness”throughthevisualdescriptionofhouse,idylliclandscapeaswellasthestreetandbuildingsinLondoninthenovelBleakHouse.
