LoveCanalorHateCanal?OneofAmerica'slargestnaturaldisasters.Superfund,thehazardousmaterialcleanupgroup,doesnotseemtoworkwell.AndPeoplecansavesomuchmoneybynotcleaningupanareathatcausesseriousmutationsjustbydrinkingthewater.ThenewssiteChemicalandEngineeringNewshasanarticleonitfromNovember17th,2008ontheatrocitiescommittedatLoveCanal.LoveCanalwasaneighborhoodinNewYorkStatewhereacompanyoriginallynamedHookerChemicaldumpedthousandsoftonsofhazardouschemicalsintothewaterandunderground.Thechemicalsthatwereburiedundergroundeventuallystartedcausingbirthdefectslikeonechildwasbornmentallyretarded,deaf,andhadteethproblems.Thecompanythatdumpedalloftheirwastearoundandinsideofthistowndidn’tdisposeproperlyofit.Theythoughtthatputtingitintothisoneareaundergroundthatwassurroundedbyimpermeableclaywouldkeepitsecureandsafe,buttheirplan(iftheyactuallyhadone)failed.Thepeopleweresounawareofthisthattheyevenbuildaschoolrightontopoftheburialsite.Inthearticleitsaidthatkidsusedtoseebubblesformingfromthedirtandwouldthrowrocksatittotryandpopit.Superfundtriedtocleanitup,buteventuallydeclaredthetownuninhabitable.Peoplecouldstilllivethereiftheywantedto,butnomorenewhousescouldbebuilt.Thepeoplethatlivedtherewhiletheywereunawareoftheproblemhadnoideathatthechemicalswereseepingintotheirbasements.Onewomansaidshewouldjustholdherbreathsoshecouldgodolaundryandthekidswerenotallowedinthebasement.PeoplecanstillgotolivetherenowlikeoneguynamedGeorgeKrebutzmovedintotheareawiththehighestcontaminationlevels.NoonetoldhimaboutitandhedidnotknowuntilheGoogled“LoveCanal”.Hopefullyhehasgottenoutofthattownbynow..
