ChainSegmentDistributionCharacterization GradientcopolymerssynthesizedbyATRPconsistofamixtureofmonomerunitswithdifferentreactivities.Asthepolymerizationproceeds,thecompositionofthepolymerchainchangesfromoneendtotheother,resultinginagradientofmonomerunits.Thechainsegmentdistributionofagradientcopolymeristhedistributionofmonomerunitsalongthepolymerchain.Accuratedeterminationofthechainsegmentdistributionisessentialtoevaluatethepropertiesofgradientcopolymers. Severalmethodshavebeendevelopedtocharacterizethechainsegmentdistributionofgradientcopolymers.OnemethodistouseNMRspectroscopy.^1HNMRspectroscopycanbeusedtodistinguishdifferentmonomerunitsinthecopolymerchainbasedontheirchemicalshift.Byanalyzingthepeakintensitiesofdifferentmonomerunits,thechainsegmentdistributionofthegradientcopolymercanbeobtained.However,theaccuracyofthismethoddependsontheresolutionoftheNMRspectraandthesignal-to-noiseratio. Anothermethodistousesizeexclusionchromatography(SEC)coupledwithmulti-anglelightscattering(MALS)andrefractiveindex(RI)detectors.SECseparatespolymersbasedontheirhydrodynamicsize,andMALSmeasurestheabsolutemolecularweightandsizeofpolymersinsolution.RIdetectorsareusedtomeasuretheconcentrationofpolymerinsolution.Bycombiningthesetechniques,thechainsegmentdistributionofthegradientcopolymercanbeobtained,aswellasthemolecularweightdistribution.
