XMLDocumenttoRelationalDatabaseConversion XMLdocumentsarecommonlyusedasameansofrepresentingstructureddatathatcanbeeasilytransmittedbetweendifferentsystems.However,whenitcomestoanalyzingandqueryingthisdatainarelationaldatabasemanagementsystem(RDBMS),theunderlyinghierarchicalstructureoftheXMLdocumentcanposeachallenge.ThekeytoconvertinganXMLdocumenttoanRDBMSliesintransformingthehierarchicaldatatotheflatrelationaldatamodel. Thereareseveralapproachestoachievingthis,butonecommonmethodistouseatoolcalledanObject-RelationalMapping(ORM)tool.ThistoolessentiallymapsthehierarchicalstructureoftheXMLdocumentontoasetofrelationaltablesintheRDBMS.ThismappingisoftendoneusingasetofrulesthatdefinehowparticularelementsintheXMLdocumentmapontodatabasetables,columns,andrelationships. AnotherapproachtoXMLdocumenttorelationaldatabaseconversionistouseaspecializedXMLdatabasemanagementsystem(XML-DBMS).ThesesystemsaredesignedspecificallytohandlethehierarchicalstructureofXMLdocumentsandoftenallowformoreefficientandflexiblequeryingofdatathananRDBMS.However,thedownsideisthatthesesystemsmaybelesswidelyusedandmayrequirespecificexpertisetoimplementandmaintain.
