Introduction Groundwaterisanimportantsourceofwaterformanycommunitiesaroundtheworld.Groundwaterresourcesareoftenusedfordrinkingwater,agriculture,andindustrialpurposes.Accuratepredictionsofgroundwaterlevelsarecrucialforsustainablewatermanagement.TheManasRiverBasinisanimportantagriculturalareainwesternChina,withalonghistoryofirrigatedagriculture.Groundwaterisacriticalcomponentofthewatersupplyintheregion,andtherefore,accurategroundwaterlevelpredictionsareessentialforsustainablewatermanagement. VisualMODFLOWisawidely-usedgroundwaterflowmodelthatiscapableofpredictinggroundwaterlevelsunderdifferentscenarios.Inthisstudy,weuseVisualMODFLOWtopredictgroundwaterlevelsinthelowerreachesoftheManasRiverBasin.Themodeliscalibratedusingavailablegroundwaterleveldata,andthenvalidatedusingadditionaldata.TheresearchfindingscanbeusedtoguidegroundwatermanagementpoliciesintheManasRiverBasin. StudyAreaandData ThestudyareaisthelowerreachesoftheManasRiverBasin,locatedinwesternChina.TheManasRiverisamajortributaryoftheIliRiver,whichflowsintotheAralSea.Thestudyareacoversanareaofapproximately1,800km2,withanelevationrangingfrom500to1,500metersabovesealevel. Groundwaterlevelsweremeasuredat20monitoringwellsinthestudyarea.Thedatawascollectedbetween2010and2019andincludesmonthlygroundwaterlevels.ThedatawasusedtocalibrateandvalidatetheVisualMODFLOWmodel.
