Background Ultrasonicthicknessmeasurementisacommonnon-destructivetestingmethodusedintheindustry.Theconventionalultrasonicpulse-echomethodiswidelyusedforthicknessmeasurement.Thismethodisbasedonthemeasurementofthetimedelaybetweenthetransmittedandreceivedultrasonicsignals.However,thismethodhaslimitationsinweldinspectionduetothepresenceofmultipleechoes.Inwelds,theultrasonicwavesundergosignificantcouplingwiththeweldedmaterials,leadingtostrongbackscatteringandmultiplereflections.Thesemultipleechoesmakeitdifficulttoaccuratelymeasurethethicknessofthewelds. Interfacewaveshavebeenproposedasanalternativetoovercometheselimitations.Interfacewavesareguidedultrasonicwavesthatpropagatealongtheinterfacebetweentwomaterials.Interfacewavesareexcitedbyawedgetransducerwhichisplacedattheedgeoftheinterface.Whentheinterfaceoftwomaterialsisperpendiculartothedirectionoftheultrasonicbeam,thenonlytheinterfacewaveisexcitedandpropagated.Thischaracteristicofinterfacewavesmakesthemsuitableforthemeasurementofthethicknessofwelds.
