OverviewoftheDC-DCConverterSystem TheDC-DCconvertersystemconsistsoftwomaincomponents:thepowerstageandthedigitalcontrolcircuitry.ThepowerstageconvertstheinputDCvoltagetothedesiredoutputvoltage,whilethedigitalcontrolcircuitrycontrolsthepowerstagetoregulatetheoutputvoltageandmaintainthedesiredefficiency. Thepowerstagetypicallyconsistsofaninductor,acapacitor,andapairofswitchingdevices(suchasMOSFETs).Theinductorstorestheenergyduringthefirsthalf-cycleoftheswitchingperiodandreleasesitduringthesecondhalf-cycletomaintainthedesiredoutputvoltage.Thecapacitorfilterstheoutputvoltagetoremoveanyhigh-frequencynoiseorripple.Theswitchingdevicesarecontrolledbythedigitalcontrolcircuitrytoswitchonandoffatappropriatetimestoregulatetheoutputvoltage. DesignConsiderations WhendesigningadigitalcontrolsystemforaDC-DCconverter,thereareseveralfactorstoconsider: 1.Controlalgorithm: Thecontrolalgorithmusedinthedigitalcontrolsystemdetermineshowthesystemwillrespondtochangesintheinputvoltage,outputvoltage,andload.TwocommoncontrolalgorithmsarePulseWidthModulation(PWM)andConstantOn-Time(COT). PWMisadigitalcontroltechniquethatvariesthedutycycleoftheswitchingdevicetoregulatetheoutputvoltage.Thedutycycleisproportionatetotheoutputvoltageandinverselyproportionatetotheinputvoltage.COTisadigitalcontroltechniquethatvariestheswitchingperiodinsteadofthedutycycle.Theswitchingperiodisinverselyproportionaltotheoutputvoltageanddirectlyproportionaltotheinputvoltage. 2.Samplingfrequency: Thesamplingfrequencyusedinthedigitalcontrolsystemdetermineshowoftenthesystemwillmeasuretheinputandoutputvoltagesandadjusttheswitchingdevices.Thesamplingfrequencymustbehighenoughtocaptureanyhi
