Background Localizationofsensornodesinwirelessnetworksisachallengingtaskduetotheinherentlimitationsofwirelesscommunication.Theexistinglocalizationtechniquescanbeclassifiedintotwocategories:range-basedandrange-free.Range-basedtechniquesinvolvethemeasurementofthedistancebetweensensornodesusingvarioustechniquessuchastimeofarrival,timedifferenceofarrival,andangleofarrival.Range-freetechniques,ontheotherhand,usetheconnectivityinformationbetweensensornodestodeterminethelocationofthenodes. RSSI-basedlocalizationisarange-freetechniquethatusesthereceivedsignalstrengthindication(RSSI)todeterminethelocationofsensornodes.RSSIisameasurementofthepowerlevelofareceivedradiosignalandisdependentonthedistancebetweenthetransmitterandthereceiver,thedirectionofthesignal,andthepresenceofanyobstacles.Duetothecomplexityofthewirelesschannel,itisdifficulttoaccuratelydeterminethedistancebetweensensornodesusingRSSI.However,RSSIcanstillbeusedtoestimatethelocationofsensornodeswithreasonableaccuracy.
