TheEASTVFCsarebuiltusinghigh-temperaturesuperconducting(HTS)technology,whichprovidesseveraladvantagesovertraditionallow-temperaturesuperconducting(LTS)materials.HTSmaterialshaveahighercriticalcurrentdensityandoperateathighertemperatures,whichreducescoolingrequirementsandincreasesreliability.TheEASTVFCsarecomposedofseverallayersofHTStapeswoundaroundastainless-steelform.Thetapesarecooledtoatemperatureof4Kusingaliquidheliumrefrigerationsystem. TheEASTVFCsarearrangedintwosetsofsixcoilseach,whicharepositionedsymmetricallyaroundthetorus.Eachcoilinthesetiswoundinanoppositesense,whichproducesanetpoloidalfieldwhenthecoilsareenergized.TheVFCsaredesignedtooperateinapulsedmode,withamaximumcurrentof11kAandamaximummagneticfieldof5T. RectificationAnalysis: TheoperationoftheEASTVFCsrequiresareliablerectificationsystem,whichconvertstheACpowersuppliedtothecoilsintoDC.TherectificationsystemmustbeabletohandlethehighcurrentandvoltagelevelsrequiredbytheVFCs,aswellasprovideastableoutputvoltageandcontroltherisetimeofthecurrent.Therectificationsystemiscomposedofseveralcomponents,includingthetransformer,diodes,andcapacitorbank. ThetransformerintherectificationsystemisusedtostepupthevoltageoftheACpowersuppliedtotheVFCs,whichreducesthecurrentrequiredtoachievetherequiredmagneticfield.ThediodesareusedtoconverttheACpowerintoDC,andthecapacitorbankisusedtosmoothouttheoutputvoltageandregulatetherisetimeofthecurrent.
