PCIExpress端点应用的FPGA实现 Introduction PCIExpress(PCIe)isastandardized,high-speedserialinterconnectprotocolthatconnectsdevices,suchasgraphicscards,storagedevices,andnetworkadapters,toacomputer'smotherboard.Withitshighbandwidthandlowlatency,PCIehasbecomethedefactostandardforhigh-performanceI/Oinmoderncomputersystems.ThispaperexplorestheimplementationofaPCIeendpointapplicationusingfield-programmablegatearrays(FPGAs). PCIeEndpointArchitecture APCIeendpointconsistsofaPCIeinterfacethatconnectstheendpointtothePCIefabricandafunctionalblockthatperformsthedataprocessingfunctionsofthedevice.Thefunctionalblockcanbeanytypeoflogicorprocessingfunction,suchasdataencryption,signalprocessing,ornetworkpacketprocessing. Figure1:PCIeEndpointArchitecture ThePCIeinterfaceisresponsibleforhandlingthelow-leveldetailsofthePCIeprotocol,suchaslinknegotiation,packetframing,andflowcontrol.ThefunctionalblockcommunicateswiththePCIeinterfacethroughasetofregistersthataremappedintotheendpoint'smemoryspace. FPGAImplementation FPGAsareidealforimplementingPCIeendpointsbecausetheyofferahighdegreeofflexibilityandprogrammability.ThefunctionalityoftheendpointcanbeprogrammedintotheFPGA'slogiccells,andthePCIeinterfacecanbeimplementedusingstandardIPcoresprovidedbytheFPGAvendororthird-partyIPvendors. OneofthebiggestadvantagesofusingFPGAsforPCIeendpointapplicationsistheabilitytocustomizetheendpointtomeetspecificperformanceorfunctionalityrequirements.Forexample,anFPGA-basedencryptionenginecouldbedesignedtosupportavarietyofencryptionalgorithmsandkeysizes,whileatraditionalASIC-basedsolutionwouldbelimitedtoafixedsetofalgorithmsandkeysizes. AnotheradvantageofFPGAsistheirabilitytosupportmultiplePCIeendpointsonasingleFPGA,whichcanreducetheoverallsystemcostandcomplexity.ByusingasingleFPGAtosupportmultipleendpoints,thesystemcaneliminatetheneedformultiplePCIeinterfacechipsandreducethenumberofinterconnectsneededbetweentheendpointsandtheCPU.
