Introduction: Geotechnicalengineersoftenencounterchallengingproblemswhendealingwithsubsurfacematerials,suchasthesettlementofsoilsunderloads,whichcanleadtoseverestructuraldamage.Tounderstandthebehaviorofthesematerials,geotechnicalengineersdevelopsimilitudemodels,whicharescaled-downversionsoftheactualsubsurfacematerialsthataretestedincontrolledlaboratoryconditions.Inthesemodels,thematerialsaresubjectedtovariousloadingconditionstosimulatetheirbehaviorandpredicttheirperformancesinreal-lifescenarios.However,obtainingaccurateanddetailedmeasurementsofthesemodelscanbechallenging,whichcancausedifficultiesininterpretingtheresultsandmakinginformeddecisions. 3Dlaserscanningtechnologyprovidesapromisingsolutiontothisproblem.Itisanon-invasiveandnon-destructivetechniquethatcanrapidlycapturehighlypreciseanddetailed3Dmeasurementsofdifferentsurfaces.Moreover,itcanbeusedtoobserveandmonitorthebehaviorofsubsurfacematerials,suchassoils,rocks,andconcrete,underdifferentloadingconditionsbycreating3Dmodelsoftheirsurfacesandtrackingtheirmovementsovertime.
