Introduction Crankshaftsareimportantrotatingcomponentsofinternalcombustionenginesthatconvertthereciprocatingmotionofpistonsintorotarymotion.Theyareusuallymadeofcastironorforgedsteelwithcomplexshapesandhighmechanicalloads.However,thedurabilityandreliabilityofcrankshaftscanbeaffectedbyawiderangeoffactors,includingmaterialquality,manufacturingprocess,operatingconditions,andmaintenancepractices.Inthispaper,wereportacaseofunexpectedcrankshaftfractureina1P68Fgasolineengine,whichwasattributedtoacombinationofmaterialdefects,crackpropagation,andfatiguedamage. Experimentaldetails Afractured1P68Fgasolineenginecrankshaftmadeofductileironwasobtainedfromalocalrepairshop.Thecrankshafthadasingle-piecedesignwithfourrodjournals,amainjournal,andasnout.ThefracturedsectionwasexaminedusingSEMandOMtodeterminethefracturemorphology,crackinitiationsite,andcrackpropagationpath.XRDandhardnesstestingwerealsoconductedtoinvestigatethechemicalcompositionandmechanicalpropertiesofthefailedcrankshaft. Resultsanddiscussion SEMandOManalysisrevealedthatthefracturesurfaceofthecrankshaftwascharacterizedbyafibrouspatternofductilefracture,whichindicatedthatthecrackhadpropagatedslowlyundercyclicbendingandtorsionloads.Thefracturesurfacealsoexhibitedarelativelysmoothareanearthecenteroftheshaft,whichsuggestedthatthecrackwasinitiated
