Introduction Structuralhealthmonitoring(SHM)isanemergingfieldthataimstoassessthestructuralintegrityofengineeringstructuresandpreventcatastrophicfailures.DamageidentificationisacrucialaspectofSHM,whichaimstodetectandlocatedamageinthestructureatanearlystage.Hence,itisessentialtodeveloprobustandreliablemethodsfordamageidentification. Oneofthemostwidelyusedmethodsfordamageidentificationisthefrequencyresponsefunction(FRF)method.TheFRFisapassivemeasurementmethodthatmeasurestheresponseofastructuretoaninputexcitation.TheFRFiswidelyusedinSHMduetoitssimplicity,lowcost,andnon-intrusivenature.However,theFRFmethodisoftenlimitedbytheneedforabaselinemodel,i.e.,anundamagedmodel,andthesensitivityofthemethodtomeasurementnoiseandmodelingerrors. Toovercometheselimitations,thispaperproposesamethodfordamageidentificationinbenchmarkstructuresusingtheextendedandmodifiedFRF.TheproposedmethodextendstheconventionalFRFmethodbyincorporatinghigher-ordertermsintheFRF,andmodifiestheFRFtoreducetheimpactofmodelingerrorsandmeasurementnoise.Theproposedmethodisvalidatedusingnumericalsimulationsonabenchmarkstructure,andtheresultsshowthattheproposedmethodiscapableofaccuratelydetectingandlocalizingdamage.
