Introduction: Automatictargetrecognition(ATR)isanimportanttaskinmanyapplicationssuchasautonomousdriving,surveillance,andguidancesystems.Itisachallengingtaskduetothecomplexityofthetargetsandthevariousenvironmentalconditions.TraditionalATRalgorithmsusehand-craftedfeaturesandmachinelearningalgorithmstorecognizetargets.However,duetothecomplexityofthetargetsandthevariabilityoftheenvironment,thesemethodshavelimitationsinaccuracyandgeneralizationability. Recentadvancesinsensortechnologyhaveledtothedevelopmentofhigh-resolutiondistanceimagingsystems,whichprovideaccuraterangeinformationofthetargets.Comparedwithtraditionalimagingsystems,high-resolutiondistanceimagingsystemscanovercomethelimitationsofocclusionandcluttercausedbytheinterferenceofdifferentobjectsinthescene.Therefore,high-resolutiondistanceimageshavebeenusedinvariousapplicationssuchasobjectdetectionandrecognition. Sparserepresentation-basedclassification(SRC)isapromisingmethodforATRduetoitsabilitytorepresentsignalsusingasetoflinearlyindependentbasisfunctions.SRChasbeenshowntoachievehighaccuracyinvariousapplicationssuchasfacerecognitionandobjectrecognition.Inthispaper,weproposeanovelapproachforATRusinghigh-resolutiondistanceimagesandSRC.
