Introduction Withtherapiddevelopmentofwirelesscommunicationtechnology,thedemandforhighdataratetransmissionandreliablecommunicationhasbecomeincreasinglyurgent.Whileexistingcommunicationtechniquessuchasfrequencydivisionmultipleaccess(FDMA)andcodedivisionmultipleaccess(CDMA)havebeenwidelyused,patterntimedelaycoding(PTDC)hasemergedasapromisingsolutionforreliablehighdataratetransmission.PTDCisatypeofpulsepositionmodulation(PPM)andisbasedontransmittingasequenceofdelayedpatterns.Comparedwithtraditionalmodulationschemes,ithasadvantagesofhighcodingefficiencyandanti-interferenceability.However,toachievebettertransmissionreliability,errorcorrectingcodesarerequired. Turbocodeisatypicaltypeoferrorcorrectingcodeusedinwirelesscommunication.However,itsapplicationinPTDCsuffersfromhighdecodingcomplexityandlongdecodingdelay.Trelliscodedmodulation(TCM)isanothererrorcorrectingcodingtechniquethatcanbeusedinPTDC.TCMcombinescodingandmodulationintooneprocessandhasbeenwidelyusedinwirelesscommunication.ThispaperaimstoexploretheapplicationofTCMinPTDCcommunicationsystemandanalyzeitsadvantagesandchallenges. BasicprinciplesofPTDCandTCM ThebasicprincipleofPTDCistotransmitasequenceofdelayedpatternsassymbols.Thetransmittedpatternsequenceiscalledthepatterntrain,andthetimedifferencebetweenadjacentpatternsiscalledthepatterndelaytime.Thereceiverfirstsynchronizesthereceivedsignalwiththetransmittedtiminginformation,andthensamplesthereceiveds
