SymbolDirectedGraphs Symboldirectedgraphs(SDGs)areusedtovisuallyrepresentthestructureandflowofchemicalprocesses.Theyarealsousedtorepresenttheirdynamicsandtoshowtheinteractionsbetweenthevariouselementsoftheprocess.TheSDGisagraphmodelthatconsistsofnodesandarcs.Thenodesrepresentthedifferentelementsoftheprocesssuchasequipment,units,andstreams.Thearcsrepresenttheconnectionsbetweenthenodes,andthedirectionofthearcrepresentsthedirectionoftheflowofmaterialorinformation. QualitativeTrendAnalysis Qualitativetrendanalysisisanotherimportanttoolusedinprocessfaultdiagnosis.Itisamethodusedtoanalyzethetrendsinprocessvariablesovertime.Thisanalysisisbasedonaclassificationofprocessvariablesintoasetofqualitativestates.Thesequalitativestatesaredefinedbasedonthebehaviorofthevariableindifferentsituations,suchassteady-state,transient,orfaultconditions.Thestatesarecharacterizedbytheirattributes,suchasdirection,rateofchange,andmagnitude. MethodforFaultDiagnosis TheproposedmethodforfaultdiagnosisofchemicalprocessesisbasedonacombinationofSDGsandqualitativetrendanalysis.Thismethodinvolvesthreemainsteps:SDGcreation,trendanalysis,andfaultdiagnosis. ThefirststepisthecreationofanSDGthatrepresentsthechemicalprocess.Thisincludestheidentificationoftheequipment,units,andstreams,aswellastheflowofmaterialandinformationbetweenthem.TheSDGshouldbeasdetailedaspossibletoallowforeffectivefaultdiagnosis.
