Introduction Potatostarchisacommonfoodingredientandisusedinawidevarietyoffoodproducts.Theproductionofpotatostarchgeneratesalargeamountofwastewaterwithhighorganiccontent,whichcanposeathreattotheenvironment.ThewastewaterfromthepotatostarchindustryischaracterisedbyahighBODandCODvaluesduetoitshighorganiccontent,makingitdifficulttotreatusingconventionalmethods. TheICreactorisapopularmethodfortreatinghigh-strengthwastewatercontainingorganicmaterial.TheICreactorcaneffectivelytreatorganic-richwastewater,especiallywithlowenergyconsumptionandlowcost.Duringtheprocessoftreatment,themicrobesinthereactorbreakdowntheorganicmaterialinwastewaterandconvertitintobiologicallystablesludge.Thus,theICreactorcanachievehighremovalefficiencyofBODandCOD. MaterialsandMethods ThestartupoftheICreactorwasperformedinalaboratory-scaleICreactorwithavolumeof5litres.Thereactorwasinitiallyinoculatedwithanaerobicsludge,whichwascollectedfromamunicipalwastewatertreatmentplant.Thepotatostarchwastewaterwascollectedfromapotatostarchprocessingindustry,locatedinthecity.ThecharacteristicsofthewastewaterwereanalysedandtheresultsarepresentedinTable1.
