Methods: Thestudyareacoversatotalof28squarekilometersandislocatedinthewesternpartoftheDongyingDepression.Fieldworkincludedgeologicalmappingandsamplingoftheinterbeddedlimestoneandshale.Laboratoryanalysisofthesamplesincludedthin-sectionpetrography,X-raydiffraction,scanningelectronmicroscopy,andtraceelementgeochemistry. Results: TheinterbeddedlimestoneandshalewithintheuppersectionofthethirdmemberoftheShahejieFormationinthewesternpartoftheDongyingDepressionareinterpretedtohaveformedthroughseawater-rockinteraction.Theinterbedsarecomposedofcarbonate-richrockswithvaryingamountsofshaleandsiltstone.Petrographicanalysisindicatesthatthelimestonesaremicriticandcontainvaryingamountsofbioclasts,whiletheshalesarecomposedofclaymineralssuchasilliteandsmectite. Theinterbeddedlimestoneandshaleexhibitarangeoftraceelementconcentrations,whichsuggeststhattheyformedunderdifferentchemicalconditions.ThelimestoneintervalshavehigherSrandMgconcentrationsrelativetotheadjacentshales,indicatingthattheywereprecipitatedinmarineenvironmentswithhighersalinitiesandalkalineconditions.ThelowerconcentrationofSrandMgintheshalesindicatesthattheyweredepositedinmorefreshwaterenvironments.Geochemicalanalysisofthelimestonesshowsthattheyhavehighδ13Cvalues,whichindicatesthattheywereprecipitatedduringape
