NeedfortheStudy Ithasbeenthousandsofyearsforstudyingirony,whichcanbetracedbacktotheancientGreeks.AfterPlato,manyscholarsfromvariousstudyingfieldsanalyzedandexplainedthiskindoflanguagephenomenon—irony.Thestudyofironyfirstoriginatedinthefieldofrhetoric.Later,manyanalysesonironyappearedinthefieldsofsemantics,psychology,pragmaticsandespeciallycognitivepragmatics.Withthedevelopmentofpragmatics,manyascholarprecededdeepandtheoreticalstudiesonitsapplication,amongwhichGrice’sinterpretationofconversationalimplicature,Searle’sinsincerespeechacttheory,andLeech’spolitenesstheorywereofgreatsignificance.In1981,SperberandWilsonopenedthedoorintoanewworldofironycomprehension.TheyproposedtreatingironyasakindofimplicitechoicdissociativeusewithintheframeworkofRelevanceTheory,developingthestudyofironicutterancesintoacognitivefield.
