Aneyeisacollectionofcellsthatarespecializedforlightdetectionthroughthepresenceofphotosensitivepigmentaswellasameansofrestrictingthedirectionofincominglightthatwillstrikethephotosensitivecells.Thisdefinitionsaysnothingaboutimageformation,lenses,eyemovements,oranyoftheotherfeaturesweassociatewithourowneyes,butitdoesrecognizethesimplestformoffunctionalandanatomicalspecialisationnamely,detectionoflight.Everythingelsecanbebuiltupfromthissimplebeginning,andsomeanimalsappeartohavehadeyesalmostfromthebeginningoftheanimalkingdom.
