ConferenceHighlights TheconferencewasopenedwithakeynotespeechbyDr.WilliamReillyoftheArmyResearchLaboratory,focusedontheuseofGaAsinelectronicandphotonicdevices.Avarietyoftechnicalsessionsfollowed,coveringtopicssuchasGaAsmaterialsandprocesses,devicephysicsandmodeling,microwaveandmillimeter-waveapplications,digitalintegratedcircuits,andoptoelectronics. OneofthekeythemesthatemergedfromtheconferencewastheincreasingimportanceofGaAsinthetelecommunicationsindustry.ResearcherspresentedarangeofpapersontheuseofGaAs-baseddevicesinhigh-frequencymicrowaveandmillimeter-wavesystems,suchassatellitecommunications,radar,andwirelessnetworks.Inparticular,therewasagreatdealofinterestinthedevelopmentofGaAs-basedtransmittersandreceiversforcellularphonesystems,whichwerejustbeginningtoemergeatthetime. AnotherkeyareaoffocusattheconferencewasthedevelopmentofdigitalGaAsICsforhigh-speeddataprocessingandcommunications.ResearchersdiscussedtheuseofGaAstechnologiesinapplicationssuchasdigitalsignalprocessing,fiber-opticcommunications,andhigh-speedcomputerinterfaces,highlightingtheadvantagesofGaAsovertraditionalsilicon-basedsemiconductors,suchashigherspeedandlowerpowerconsumption.
