Introduction: Chilipepper(Capsicumspp.)isnativetoMexicoandhasbeencultivatedforthousandsofyears.Ithasspreadthroughouttheworld,becominganimportantcashcropinmanycountries.ThecultivationandutilizationofchilipepperinChinadatebacktotheTangDynasty(618-907AD).Today,Chinaisoneofthelargestproducersandconsumersofchilipepper,withawiderangeofregionalspecialtiesandadiversityofgenotypes. ChilipepperbreedinginChinahasalongtradition,butitfacesvariouschallenges,suchaslowyield,insufficientquality,andsusceptibilitytodiseases.Tomeettheincreasingdemandforhigh-qualitychiliproductsandimprovethecompetitivenessoftheindustry,newvarietieswithenhancedtraitsareurgentlyneeded.Therefore,thispaperaimstoreviewthecurrentstatusofchilipepperbreedinginChina,identifythechallengesandconstraintsforbreeders,andproposestrategiesforfuturedevelopment.
