Introduction Digitalsignalprocessing(DSP)isubiquitousinmodernelectronicdevicessuchasmobilephones,digitalcamerasandtelevisionsets.DSPimagesareoftenusedinthesedevices,andthestorageandtransmissionofDSPimagesisanimportantissue.ThehighdataraterequiredforDSPimagesmakestheirtransmissionandstorageproblematic.Losslesscompressionisoftenusedtoreducethesizeofimagedatawhilepreservingthequalityoftheimage.Huffmancodingisawidelyusedtechniqueforthispurpose,asitcanprovidehighcompressionratioswhilemaintainingtheoriginaldata. HuffmanEncoding Huffmanencodingisamethodofvariable-lengthcodingthatisusedtoreducetheamountofdataneededtorepresentamessage.InHuffmancoding,afrequencyanalysisoftheinputdataisperformedandavariablelengthcodeisassignedtoeachcharacterbasedonthefrequencyofitsoccurrence.Characterswithhigherfrequenciesareassignedshortercodeswhilethosewithlowerfrequenciesareassignedlongercodes.Thisallowsfortheconstructionofacodetablewherethemostfrequentlyoccurringcharactersarerepresentedbyshortercodes,therebyreducingtheoverallsizeofthedata. Huffmancodingcanproduceanoptimalcodeintermsofreducingthesizeofthedataforagivenmessage.Thealgorithmworksbyconstructingabinarytreeinwhicheachleafnoderepresentsacharacterandthepathfromtheroottotheleafnoderepresentsthecodeforthatcharacter.Thetreeisconstructedbyrepeatedlymergingthetwoleastfrequentcharactersuntiltheentiresetofcharactersisrepresentedbyasinglesubtree.Theprocessisthenreversedtobuildacodetablefromthetree.
