Introduction Resistancespotwelding(RSW)isacommonlyusedweldingtechnique,whichiswidelyusedinautomobileandaerospaceindustries.ThegoalofRSWistobondtwometalpartstogetherbyheatingthemtothemeltingpointusingaconcentratedelectricalcurrent.Thequalityofthewelddependsonseveralparameters,includingtheweldingcurrent,theweldingtime,andtheelectrodeforce.Oneofthemostcriticalparametersistheneutralpoint(NP). TheNPisthepointwherethecurrentdensityiszero,andtheheatgeneratedbythecurrentisthelowest.Inotherwords,theNPisthepointwherethetwometalpartsareindirectcontactwitheachother.ThelocationoftheNPisaffectedbyseveralfactors,suchasthethicknessofthemetalparts,theelectrodegeometry,andthesurfaceconditionofthemetalparts. Traditionally,thelocationoftheNPisdeterminedbymeasuringthecurrentwaveform.However,thismethodhasseverallimitations,suchasthecomplexityofthemeasurementsetupandthesensitivityofthemeasurementtotheelectrodewear.Toovercometheselimitations,anewtechniquebasedonimagetechnologyforNPdetectionhasbeenproposed. Inthispaper,aneutralpointdetectionsystembasedonimagetechnologyforresistancespotweldingelectrodesisproposed.Thesystemusesacameratocapturetheimageoftheweldnuggetduringtheweldingprocess.TheimageprocessingunitdetectsthepositionoftheweldnuggetandcalculatestheNP.ThecontrolunitadjuststheweldparametersbasedontheNPvaluetoensureabetterweldquality.
