Keywords:Moleculardistillation,Citrusfragranceoil,Limonene,Optimization,ResponseSurfaceMethodology 1.Introduction Citrusfragranceoilsarewidelyusedintheperfumeryandflavorindustriesduetotheirfreshandinvigoratingscent.However,theseoilscontainvolatilecompoundssuchaslimonene,whichcancauseallergiesandirritationsincertainindividuals.Therefore,theremovaloflimonenewhilepreservingthedesirablefragrancecharacteristicsofcitrusoilsiscrucialforproductsafetyandquality. 2.RationaleandObjectives Theobjectiveofthisstudywastooptimizethemoleculardistillationprocessfortheremovaloflimonenefrombitterorangeessentialoil.ByusingResponseSurfaceMethodology,weaimedtodeterminetheoptimalprocessparametersthatwouldminimizethelimonenecontentwhilemaximizingtheretentionofotherdesirablearomaticcompounds. 3.MaterialsandMethods 3.1.Materials -Bitterorangeessentialoilcontainingaknownconcentrationoflimonene -Commercialmoleculardistillationequipment 3.2.ExperimentalDesign Theexperimentwasdesignedusingacentralcompositedesign(CCD)oftheRSM.Thedistillationparameters,suchasevaporatortemperature,feedflowrate,andvacuumpressure,wereselectedasindependentvariables,whilethelimonenecontentinthedistillatewastheresponsevariable.TheRSMsoftwarewasusedtogenerateadesignmatrixcomprisingatotalof20experimentalruns. 3.3.DistillationProcedure Thebitterorangeessentialoilwassubjectedtomoleculardistillationusingthepredeterminedprocessparametersobtainedfromtheexperimentaldesign.Thedistillatewascollectedandanalyzedforlimonenecontentusinggaschromatography. 4.ResultsandDiscussion 4.
