Background Theradiativepropertiesofsnowhavebeenstudiedformanydecades.Itiswell-knownthatsnowhasahighalbedo,reflectingabout80-90%oftheincomingsolarradiation.Thealbedoofsnowdependsonseveralfactorssuchassnowgrainsize,shape,density,andimpuritycontent.Thespectralalbedoofsnowdecreaseswithincreasingwavelengthduetotheabsorptionofsolarradiationbyiceparticlesandimpuritiesinthesnow. Theemissivityofsnowisanimportantparameterforunderstandingitsradiativepropertiesatthermalwavelengths.Theemissivityofsnowisusuallylessthan0.99duetoitsroughandporoussurface.Theemissivityofsnowdecreaseswithincreasingsurfacetemperatureduetothedecreaseinthethermalradiationemittedbysnow. PolarizedRadiativePropertiesofSnow Snowhasacomplexmicrostructurethatcanaffectitspolarizedradiativeproperties.Thepolarizationoflightcanoccurduetothereflection,refraction,andscatteringoflightbysnowparticles.Thepolarizationoflightdependsontheangleofincidenceandemission.Thepolarizedradiativepropertiesofsnowatdifferentanglesofincidenceandemissionhavebeenstudiedusingdifferenttechniquessuchaspolarimeters,spectrometers,andradiometers. Polarimetersareinstrumentsthatmeasurethepolarizationstateoflight.Theycanbeusedtomeasurethedegreeandangleofpolarizationoflightreflectedortransmittedbysnow.Spectrometerscanbeusedtomeasurethepolarizedreflectanceofsnowatdifferentwavelengths.Radiometerscanbeusedtomeasurethepolarizedradianceofsnowatdifferentanglesofemission.
