Resistance-TypeSuperconductingLimiter:Overview Aresistance-typesuperconductinglimiter(RSL)isadeviceconsistingofasuperconductorinseriesconnectionwitharesistor.Thesuperconductorhaszeroresistanceatacertainlowtemperature,whiletheresistorprovidesaspecificresistancetothesuperconductortolimittheelectriccurrent.WhenafaultcurrentflowsthroughtheRSL,theresistanceofthesuperconductorincreases,andthecurrentiscontrolledbytheresistor. EffectofRSLonTransientStability Thetransientstabilityofthepowersystemreferstoitsabilitytomaintainsynchronizedoperationafteradisturbance.Atransientinstabilityoccurswhenthesystemdeviatesfromthesteady-stateconditionandoperatesinanuncoordinatedmanner.Thecauseofatransientinstabilityisthesuddenincreaseoftheelectricalpowerinthesystem,creatingovercurrentsthatexceedthepermissiblelimitsofequipment.AnRSLcanlimittheseovercurrentsand,therefore,improvethetransientstabilityofthepowersystem. WhenanRSLisconnectedinthesystem,itprovidesahighlynonlinearimpedancecharacteristic.ThecharacteristicsoftheRSLdependonitsresistanceandinductancevalues,thecriticalcurrent,thetransitiontemperature,andotherfactors.Duringafault,theresistanceoftheRSLincreases,anditsinductancereducesitseffectiveimpedance.Thus,theRSLexhibitsatypeofdynamicresponsethatisidealfortransientstabilityimprovement. TheeffectivenessoftheRSLincontrollingtheovercurrentandimprovingtransientstabilityhasbeenevaluatedbymanysimulationstudies.AstudyconductedbyGhandanfardandVahididemonstratedthattheRSLcouldsignificantlyreduc
