EPON与GPON的对比探讨 Introduction EthernetPassiveOpticalNetwork(EPON)andGigabitPassiveOpticalNetwork(GPON)aretwocompetingtechnologiesusedfordatatransmissionoverfiberopticcables.Bothofthesetechnologiesprovidehigh-speedinternetaccessforresidentialandbusinessusers.ThispaperaimstoexploreandcompareEPONandGPONtechnologiesintermsoftheirarchitecture,protocols,speed,andotherfeatures. EPONArchitectureandProtocol EPONisbasedontheEthernetstandard,whichiswidelyusedforlocalareanetworks(LANs).Itusespoint-to-multipoint(P2MP)architecture,whereasingleopticalfiberissharedamongmultipleusers.TheOLT(OpticalLineTerminal)attheserviceprovider'sendcommunicateswithmultipleONTs(OpticalNetworkTerminals)atthecustomer'send.TheONTsconverttheopticalsignalsintoelectricalsignalsandviceversa. ThecommunicationbetweentheOLTandONTisbasedontheIEEE802.3ahstandard.Thisstandarddefinestwotypesofframes:EthernetframesandEPON-specificframes.TheEthernetframescarrythecustomer'sdata,whiletheEPON-specificframescarrycontrolinformation,suchasdataschedulingandbandwidthallocation. GPONArchitectureandProtocol GPON,ontheotherhand,isbasedontheITU-TG.984standard.ItusesasimilarP2MParchitecture,whereasingleopticalfiberissharedamongmultipleusers.TheOLTcommunicateswithmultipleONUs(OpticalNetworkUnits)atthecustomer'send.TheONUsaresimilartoONTsinEPON,buttheysupportmorefeatures,suchasvoiceoverIP(VoIP)andIPTV. ThecommunicationbetweentheOLTandONUisbasedontheITU-TG.984standard,whichdefinesvarioustypesofframes,suchasdownstreambroadcastframes,upstreamreportingframes,andRangingframes.TheGPONstandardalsosupportswavelengthdivisionmultiplexing(WDM),whichallowsmultipledatastreamstobetransmittedoverasinglefiberusingdifferentwavelengths. SpeedandBandwidth BothEPONandGPONprovidehigh-speedinternetaccess,butGPONisgenerallyfasterthanEPON.GPONsupportsdownstreamspeedsofupto2.5Gbpsandupstreamspeedsofupto1.25Gbps.EPON,ontheotherhand,supportsdownstreamspeedsofupto1Gbpsandupstreamspeedsofupto1Gbps. BothEPONandGPONprovideenoughbandwidthformostresidentialandbu
