History Theconceptofadsorptionhasbeenknownformanyyears,withprimitivefiltersbeingusedtoseparategasesbyadsorption.However,itwasnotuntiltheearly1960sthatthefirstcommercialPSAunitwasdeveloped,whichusedactivatedcarbonastheadsorbent.Thiswasprimarilyusedintheproductionofoxygenfromair.Inthefollowingdecades,theuseofPSAexpandedtoothergasessuchashydrogen,nitrogen,argon,andhelium.Withtheadvancesintechnology,newadsorbentssuchaszeolites,silicagels,andcarbonmolecularsievesweredeveloped,whichgreatlyexpandedtherangeofgasesthatcouldbeseparatedbyPSA. Principle ThePSAprocessworksontheprincipleofselectiveadsorption,basedontheaffinityofthegasmoleculetowardstheadsorbentsurface.Theprocessinvolvestwophases:adsorptionanddesorption.Duringtheadsorptionphase,thegasmixtureisintroducedintoapressurizedvesselcontainingtheadsorbentmaterial.Thegasmoleculeswithahigheraffinitytowardstheadsorbentsurfaceareselectivelyadsorbed,whilethosewithaloweraffinityareallowedtopassthrough.Theadsorptionphasecontinuesuntiltheadsorbentbedissaturated,atwhichpointthevalvebetweenthefeedandproductstreamisswitched,andthedesorptionphasebegins. Duringthedesorptionphase,thepressureisreduced,whichcausestheadsorbedgasmoleculestodesorbfromtheadsorbentsurfaceandflowoutofthebed.Thedesorptionphaseiscontinueduntiltheadsorbentbe
