Introduction Colorenhancementtechniquesaimtoimprovethevisualqualityofdigitalimages.Variousmethodshavebeenproposedtoachievethisgoal,suchashistogramequalization,contraststretching,andfiltering.However,traditionalcolorenhancementmethodssufferfromsomeproblemssuchasintensitydistortion,lossofimagedetails,andover-smoothing.TheselimitationshaveledtothedevelopmentofRetinex-basedimageenhancementtechniques,whicharewidelyusedincolorimageprocessing. Retinextheory TheRetinextheoryisacolorprocessingtechniquethatmimicsthehumanvisualsystem.Itdescribestherelationshipbetweenthecolorofanobjectandtheilluminationconditionsinwhichitisviewed,suchastheamountandcolorofambientlight.Thehumanvisualsystemiscapableofperceivingthetruecolorofanobjectdespitechangesinillumination.Retinextheoryisbasedontheassumptionthattheperceivedcolorofanobjectistheresultoftheobject'sreflectance,orintrinsiccolor,combinedwiththeamountandcolorofincidentlight.Thistheoryiswidelyappliedincolorimageprocessing.
