Gastricemptyingreferstotherateatwhichfoodisemptiedfromthestomachintothesmallintestine.Thisprocessisregulatedbyanumberoffactorsincludinggastricmotility,thetypeandcompositionofthefood,andthepresenceofhormonesandneurotransmitters.Ghrelinhasbeenshowntoplayaroleinregulatinggastricemptyingbyincreasinggastricmotilityandpromotingthereleaseofgastricacid. Severalstudieshaveinvestigatedtheeffectofghrelinongastricemptyinginrats.Inonestudy,ratswereinjectedwithghrelinandtheirgastricemptyingwasmeasuredusingaradiolabeledmeal.Theresultsshowedthatghrelinincreasedgastricemptyingbyupto50%,indicatingthatghrelinstimulatesgastricmotilityandpromotestheemptyingoffoodintothesmallintestine.
