IntroductiontoDragonBoatFestivalFallingonthe5thdayofthe5thmonthaccordingtoChineselunarcalendar,theDragonBoatFestivalisoneofgreatsignificance.Ithasbeenheldannuallyformorethan2,000yearsandisnotableforitseducationalinfluence.ThefestivalcommemoratesthepatrioticpoetQuYuan(340-278BC),andalsoactsasachanceforChinesepeopletobuildtheirbodiesanddispeldiseases.ManylegendscirculatearoundthefestivalbutthemostpopularisthelegendofQuYuan. LegendofQuYuan AsaministerintheStateofChu-oneofthesevenwarringstatesbeforeQin(221BC-206BC)inChina'sfirstfeudaldynasty-QuYuansupportedthedecisiontofightagainstthepowerfulStateofQin(oneofthesevenstatesduringtheWarringStatesPeriod(476BC-221BC))togetherwiththeStateofQi(ibid).HoweverhewasslanderedbythearistocratZiLanandwassubsequentlyexiledbytheKing.Inordertoshowhisloveandpassionforhiscountry,hewrotemanyenduringpoemssuchasLiSao(TheLament),TianWen(AskingQuestionstotheHeaven)andJiuGe(NineSongs)andisthereforeregardedasafamouspoetinChina'shistory.In278BC,afterfinishinghislastmasterpiece-HuaiSha(EmbracingtheSand),hedrownedhimselfintheriverratherthanseehiscountryoccupiedandconqueredbytheStateofQin.OnhearingofQuYuan'sdeath,allthelocalpeoplenearbywereingreatdistress.FishermensearchedforhisbodybysailingtheirboatsdowntheriverandotherpeoplethrewfoodsuchaseggsandfoodlikericedumplingintotherivertoattractfishandotheranimalsfromdestroyingQuYuan'sbody.Later,manypeopleimitatedtheseactstoshowtheirrespectforthisgreatpatrioticpoetandthispracticecontinuestoday. BecauseQuYuandiedonthefifthdayofthefifthlunarmonth,peopledecidedtocommemoratehimonthatdayeveryyear.Dragonboatracingandeatingricedumplinghavebecomethecentralcustomsofthefestival.Fortwothousandyears,QuYuan'spatrioticspirithasinfluencednumerouspeopleandheremainsreveredbythepeoplefromallovertheworld.
