Introduction Combinedcoal-rockmassesarecommoninminingengineeringandcivilengineering,inwhichcoalandrockarecloselycombinedandformacomplexmechanicalbehavior.Theinterfacebetweencoalandrockplaysanessentialroleinthemechanicalbehaviorofthecombinedcoal-rockmass.Theinclinationangleoftheinterfaceandthefractalcharacteristicsofthecontactsurfaceshavebeenidentifiedasimportantfactorsaffectingthemechanicalbehaviorofthecombinedcoal-rockmass.Thestudyofthemechanicalpropertiesandfailuremechanismofthecombinedcoal-rockmassisofgreatsignificanceforthesafetyandstabilityassessmentoftheengineeringprojects. Thedistinctelementmethod(DEM)isapowerfulnumericalanalysismethodforsimulatingthemechanicalbehaviorofdiscretemedia,andithasbeenwidelyusedinthestudyofrockmechanicsandminingengineering.Inthisstudy,weusetheDEMtoinvestigatethemechanicalbehaviorandfailuremechanismofthecombinedcoal-rockmassconsideringtheinterfaceinclinationandfractalcharacteristics. Methodology Thecombinedcoal-rockmassissimulatedbasedonatwo-dimensionalDEMmodelconsistingofsphericalparticles.Thecoalandrockparticlesareseparatedbyaplaneinterface,andthecontactsurfacesarecharacterizedbythefractaldimension.Theinclinedangleoftheinterfaceiscontrolledbytheinclinationang
