TheChineseloveinvokingtheircountry’srichandgloriouspast,sotheylappedupPresidentXiJinping’s“OneBelt,OneRoad”plan,announcedinlate2013,whichaimstorestorethecountry’soldmaritimeandoverlandtraderoutes.MrXihopestoliftthevalueoftradewithmorethan40countriesto$2.5trillionwithinadecade,spendingnearly$1trillionofgovernmentmoney.SOEsandstatefinancialinstitutionsarebeingpushedtoinvestoverseasinsuchareasasinfrastructureandconstruction.AccordingtotheEIU,plannersseethisasanoutletforthevastovercapacityinindustriessuchassteelandheavyequipment.Itseemslikelytoleadtoamassivespendingbinge,butcompaniesshouldremainwary.Governmentsupportwillnotnecessarilyensuresuccess.
