Salicylicacid(SA)isanaturallyoccurringphenoliccompoundfoundinmanyplants.SAhasbeenwidelyusedinmedicineandcosmeticsduetoitsanti-inflammatory,antioxidative,andantibacterialproperties.Inrecentyears,theapplicationofSAinthedetectionof•OHhasgainedincreasingattention.ThispaperaimstoexploretheapplicationsofSAinhydroxylradicaldetection,focusingonitsmechanism,methods,andpotentialfuturedevelopments. Methods: 1.ChemicalReactionwithHydroxylRadicals: ThereactionbetweenSAand•OHcanbequantifiedbymonitoringtheformationoftheoxidizedproductorbyspectroscopictechniques.SAreactswith•OHtoform2,3-dihydroxybenzoicacid(2,3-DHBA),whichcanbemeasuredusingmethodssuchashigh-performanceliquidchromatography(HPLC)orspectrophotometry.Thismethodprovidesadirectmeasurementofthehydroxylradicalconcentration. 2.FluorescentProbe: FluorescentprobesbasedonthereactionbetweenSAand•OHhavealsobeendeveloped.SAderivatives,suchas2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehydeSA(DHSAL)and2,5-dihydroxybenzaldehydeSA(DMSAL),canreactwith•OHtoformhighlyfluorescentproducts.Theseprobescanbeutilizedforfluorescencemicroscopyimagingof•OHinbiologicalsystems. 3.ElectrochemicalDetection: SA-modifiedelectrodeshavebeenpreparedandusedforelectrochemicaldetectionof•OH.Themodifiedelectrodesdisplayenhancedsensitivityandselectivitytowards•OHduetothespecificreactionbetweenSAand•OH.Techniquessuchascyclicvoltammetryandelectrochemicalimpedancespectroscopyhavebeenemployedtoquantify•OHconcentration.
