Introduction: Collisionsbetweenshipsandbridgepiersareasignificantsafetyconcerninthemaritimeindustry.Thesecollisionscancauseseveredamagetoboththeshipandthebridge,andcanleadtolossoflifeandenvironmentaldamage.Thepowerresponseofashipduringacollisionwithabridgepierisacriticalfactorthatdeterminestheextentofthedamage.Thepowerresponseisinfluencedbyfactorssuchastheship'sspeed,angleofcollision,andthestiffnessofthepier.Inthisstudy,weaimedtoinvestigatethepowerresponseofashipduringacollisionwithabridgepierandidentifythefactorsthatinfluencethisresponse. Methodology: Weconductedexperimentsusingascaled-downmodelofaship.Themodelwasmadeofsteelandwas1:20inscale.Themodelwasplacedonahydraulicplatformthatallowedustosimulatedifferentcollisionscenarios.Weusedhydrauliccylinderstosimulatecollisionsbetweentheshipandthebridgepier.Wevariedthespeedandangleofcollisiontoinvestigatetheireffectsonthepowerresponse.Wealsovariedthestiffnessofthepiertoinvestigateitseffectonthepowerresponse. Results: Ourexperimentsshowedthatthepowerresponseoftheshipduringacollisionwiththebridgepierwasinfluencedbyseveralfactors.Thespeedoftheshiphadasignificanteffectonthepowerresponse,withhigherspeedsresultinginlargerforcesanddeformations.Theangleofcollisionalsohadasignificanteffectonthepowerresponse,withobliquecollisionsresultinginlargerforcesanddeformationsthanperpendicularcollisions.Thestiffnessofthepieralsohadasignificanteffectonthepowerresponse,withstifferpiersresultinginlargerforcesanddeformations.
