Introduction: Water-basedlubricantsarewidelyusedduetotheireco-friendlynatureandsuperiorcoolingproperties.However,theyoftenexhibitlimitedlubricityandload-carryingcapabilities.Toaddressthischallenge,water-solubleextremepressureadditives(AEPs)havebeendeveloped,whichoffersuperiorlubricatingpropertiesevenunderhigh-pressureconditions.ThispaperaimstoexploretherecentadvancementsandunderstandtheunderlyingmechanismsofAEPs. SynthesisofAEPs: AEPsarechemicallysynthesizedcompounds,primarilyderivedfromsulfurorphosphorus-basedcompounds.Variousmethodsofsynthesishavebeenadopted,includingthiol-eneandthiol-yneclickchemistry,condensationreactions,andnucleophilicsubstitutionreactions.ThesesynthesisroutesenablethemodificationofAEPstoenhancetheirsolubility,reactivity,anddispersibility.
