MayoClinicMayoClinicisanot-for-profitmedicalpracticeandmedicalresearchgroupspecializingintreatingdifficultpatients.PatientsarereferredtoMayoClinicfromacrosstheU.S.andtheworld,anditisknownforinnovativeandeffectivetreatments.MayoClinicisknownforbeingatthetopofmostaccreditedqualitystandardlistings.Forexample,ithasbeennearthetopoftheUSNewsandWorldReportListofBestHospitalsformorethan20years.Thepracticeisdistinguishedbyintegratedcare,andastrongresearchpresenceisevidencedbythefactthatover40%ofitsresourcesaredevotedtowardsresearch(ratherthanjustmedicalpractice).History OnAugust21,1883,atornadostruckRochester,causingatleast37deathsintheareaandover200injuries.One-thirdofthetownwasdestroyed,buttheMayofamilyescapedseriousharm.Thereliefeffortsbeganimmediatelywithatemporaryhospitalbeingestablishedatthecitydancehall,andthedoctorsMayo(W.W.andWill)wereextensivelyinvolvedintreatingtheinjuredwhowerebroughtthereforhelp.MotherAlfredMoesandtheSistersofSaintFrancis(ateachingorder)werecalledintoactasnursesdespitehavingbeentrainedasteachersandwithlittleifanymedicalexperience.Afterthecrisishadsubsided,MotherAlfredMoesapproachedW.W.MayoaboutestablishingahospitalinRochesterifheagreedtostaffthehospital.OnSeptember30,1889,thedreambecamerealityasSaintMarysHospitalopeneditsdoors.Dr.W.W.Mayo(whobythistimewas70yearsofage)becametheconsultingphysicianandsurgeonatthehospital,andhistwosonsbeganseeingpatientsandperformingsurgerieswiththeassistanceoftheSistersofSaintFrancis.TheGroupPracticecontinuedsteadygrowththroughoutthe20thCentury.ThecampuscontinuedtogrowtokeepupwithpatientnumbersandanincreasingresearchfocusoftheClinic'soperations.Gondabuilding ()CoreValues PatientCare Eachyear,morethan1millionpatientsfromall50statesandfrommorethan150countriesareseenatoneoftheMayoClinicfacilities.MayoClinicoffershighlyspecialisticmedicalcare,andalargeportionofthepatientpopulationisreferralsfromsmallerclinicsandhospitalsfromacrosstheupperMidwestandtheUnitedStatesasawhole.MayoClinicphysiciansarepaidafixedsalarythatisn
