Introduction Highmagnesiumaluminumalloysarewidelyusedintheaerospace,automotive,andelectronicindustriesduetotheirexcellentstrength-to-weightratio,goodcorrosionresistance,andhighthermalconductivity.However,thepresenceofmagnesiuminthealloypromotestheformationoflargeandcoarsegrains,leadingtoreducedmechanicalpropertiesandsusceptibilitytoenvironmentalattack.Onewaytoovercomethisissueistoaddrareearthelementsasgrainrefinerstothealloy.Theadditionofrareearthelementscaneffectivelyrefinethegrainsizeandimprovethemechanicalpropertiesofaluminumalloys.However,thetraditionaladditionofrareearthelementsoftenresultsinunevendistributionandpoordissolution,limitingtheireffectonthemicrostructureandpropertiesofthealloy.Rapidsolidificationtechnologyhasbeenshowntobeaneffectivewaytoincorporaterareearthelementsintothealloyandrefinethegrainsizeofhighmagnesiumaluminumalloys.
