Chitosanisanaturalpolysaccharidematerialthatiswidelyavailablefromtheexoskeletonofcrustaceans,includingshrimpandcrabs,andhaspotentialinenergyapplicationsduetoitsrenewableandenvironmentallyfriendlyproperties.Chitosancanbemodifiedbyintroducingsulfonicacidgroups,whichenhanceitsprotonexchangeproperties.Theresultingchitosan-basedPEMshavebeenshowntohaveexcellentprotonconductivityandstabilityinacidicandalkalineenvironments.
