ThestudyfocusesonthePalinetunnelinItaly,whichwasexcavatedusingadrill-and-blastmethod.Theexcavationwasconductedinaheterogeneousgeologicalenvironment,whichposedasignificantchallengetothestabilityofthetunnel.Thestudyemploysthree-dimensionalfiniteelementmodelstoinvestigatethedistributionofstressanddeformationinthetunnelroofduringexcavation.Themodelsconsidervariousfactors,includingthestrengthoftherock,theorientationofthediscontinuities,andthelocationoftheexcavationface.
